“Where's your office?” That may seem like an easy question to answer, but for entrepreneur Merrily Orsini it's a little more complicated. As CEO and president of My Virtual Corp, Orsini envisions a world where workers render services remotely, communicating through technology without need for a traditional office. My Virtual Corp provides the tools — in this case, consultants and technology — to help other companies make the most of remote-sited workers. Orsini, 56, began My Virtual Corp five years ago after learning how to manage from afar with her former company, Elder Care Solutions, which provided home-based long-term care using remote workers (and still does under new ownership).

My Virtual Corp has also connected with software giant Microsoft. It is a beta testing site for Microsoft's new SharePoint technology, which lets several workers access and change the same document and allows calendar and contact sharing between groups. “Microsoft realized that virtual offices are the trend, and their technology is geared to the idea of working from remote locations,” Orsini says.

Another arm of her company provides internet-based marketing, design, and public relations services. In September, Orsini plans to separate this division from My Virtual Corp. The spin-off company will be called Core3.

“When I began this business, I didn't have a traditional office because I didn't need one,” says Orsini. “When clients kept asking where the office was located, I decided to lease one.”

But the CEO now realizes that having no office is exactly the point of her business. She's planning to be office-less once again sometime this fall. “I prefer to work from my choice of location,” she says, “and with technology, I can do that, no matter where I am.”
