This morning I was in Target buying a lampshade. In the checkout line behind me were a harried young mother and her five-year-old daughter. I watched casually as the little girl eyed the candy counter and her mom unloaded the shopping cart.

“Mommy? Have I been good in here today?”

“Pretty good,” her mother responded distractedly.

The girl paused and then reached for a piece of candy and held it up to her mother, “Can I have this please?”

“Maybe. Well, we’ll see. Let’s take care of this first,” her mother replied.

I left before the final result, but I was confident the little girl would get what she wanted.

Why am I sharing this story?

  • Timed – she waited until the checkout line and got her mother to acknowledge her good behavior
